This issue of the R&D Blueprint in two articles provides an overview of a unique process to measure the effectiveness of pharmacological drugs by receptor occupancy (RO) assays by flow cytometric analysis. These assays are used by the Research and Development Department at ICON Central Laboratories to enumerate the binding of biologics in the form of monoclonal antibodies to specific immune cell receptors. The final readout of these assays determines the effectiveness of drugs in a number of immune-based or oncological disease processes.

In this issue of the R&D Blueprint we take a detailed look at regulatory T (Treg) cells, a key player of the immune system. The first article provides an overview of regulatory T cells and their role in maintaining homeostasis. These suppressor T cells serve a vital mechanism of negative regulation in the normal immune response and as a target for immune modulation, based upon their role in disease. The second article outlines techniques for identifying T cells by flow cytometry. The final article in this trilogy addresses the role of T cells in disease and clinical implications

As our accomplished science and research teams continue to strive for innovation and development, we are delighted to announce the 2nd edition of ICON's R&D Blueprint . This edition contains two feature articles.; the first brought to us by Dr. Li Zhou takes an exploratory look at biologics, which are increasingly used to support clinical trials and disease treatment. The second, looks at the critical relationship between sponsors and CRO's, and the key to becoming a trusted advisor. As always we welcome any thoughts, feedback or topic requests. Enjoy
